Did you know?
The demoiselle crane, also known as the Numidian crane, is one of the smallest crane species. Its nest, fairly rudimentary, is usually built directly on the ground, often near a body of water. Cranes migrating in formation adopt a V-shape to conserve energy: the individual at the front creates a slipstream that benefits those following, and gives up its place when tired.
Threats and conservation
The demoiselle crane is not considered to be endangered. Nevertheless, the reduction and degradation of its habitat and the use of pesticides pose threats both in its natural environment and along the migratory routes it follows. This species is protected throughout the national territory.
