Did you know?
The Asiatic lion is smaller than its African cousin, with a less developed mane in males. Unlike the African lion, the Asiatic lion does not live in large prides. Several groups of lionesses share the same territory, often defended by a few males. The latter only interact with females during the breeding season or during large game hunts.
Threats and conservation
The Asiatic lion population, estimated at around 300 individuals, is protected but remains threatened by human activity. They are vulnerable to fires, epidemics and poisoning of prey. The creation of at least one other wild population is recommended for the security of the population. It is important to involve local communities in this project so as not to generate hostility towards lion conservation.
