Description

This bird is thought to be the closest relative of the Mauritius dodo, extinct since the 17th century. Rather gregarious, the Nicobar pigeon lives inc olonies, but forms stable pairs.

Threat and preservation

Despite its endangered status, the Nicobar pigeon continues to be hunted for its meat and illegal trade. It is also seriously threatened by the introduction of invasive species (rats, cats) into its territory.
