Description
Bantengs live in groups of 2 to 40 individuals, led by adominant male and including females and their young. Males are easily recognized by their black coats. They play a crucial role in ecosystems by dispersing nutrients and seeds via their excrement, and are an essential food source for carnivores such as tigers and leopards.
treats and preservation
Bantengs are illegally hunted and losing their habitat to human expansion. Most live in protected areas in Java, but hybridization with domestic cattle is threatening their genetic diversity. Conservation efforts include anti-poaching in national parks, population monitoring and international breeding programs to preserve their genetic diversity
