White-cheeked gibbons exhibit sexual dimorphism: males have black fur with white tufts on their cheeks, while females are beige. Their thumbs, both on their hands and feet, are opposable, allowing them to grasp food and move easily through the trees with their hook-shaped hands, facilitating brachiation.
Threats and preservation
Due to deforestation and poaching, the gibbon population is severely threatened with extinction. To combat the species’ disappearance, in-situ conservation programs, such as the Kalaweit project, have been established to protect gibbons in their natural habitat and ensure their long-term survival. EAZA member zoos, such as ZooParc de Trégomeur, complement the work of field organizations through European breeding programs.
